AUGIWorld and RTC
I've received a copy of AUGIWorld in printed form as AUGI works toward making it available to the AUGI membership. As I write this I'm not sure where that effort stands but it is good to see it back in a physical magazine form again after several years of only being available as an eZine. I recall being shocked at the cost of producing it when I served on AUGI's Board. It was a very significant portion of AUGI's budget then. I'm guessing that getting a printed copy of AUGIWorld will involve some sort of subscription to help keep the cost to produce it in check.

AUGI Survey Says
AUGI has a "curiosity" survey running right now. Visit the site and take a look at the right hand side of the page, scroll down a bit.
The option I need isn't there..."Brochure inside AutoCAD Software Box"... that makes me a bit of an old timer. I first heard about AUGI in the late 90's. I joined a couple years before my first AU and participated in the "Guilds", email based community support network. You sent a question to a guild email address and it got passed on to everyone in the guild and whoever had time, an interest and hopefully the answer responded.
If you are interested in helping AUGI discover how people are finding out about the group, wander over there and check off the one that best fits you.

AUGI Candidates

The AUGI Board is composed of nine directors elected on a rotating basis for three-year terms by the membership of Autodesk Users Group International (AUGI). The board includes professionals from varying locations worldwide who use, train and support the varying products of Autodesk software.
Each year the Nomination & Elections Committee and the AUGI Board strive to include candidates that represent diverse interests and global perspectives. The seven colleagues who have graciously agreed to stand for election for the three positions spanning the 2012-2014 term are (in alphabetical order):
Members now have the opportunity to view candidates’ information and ask questions.

AUGIWorld and AUGI | AEC EDGE
BLAUGI recently posted some news about the two eZines that AUGI produces. The short story is that AUGI | AEC EDGE (AAE) is "no more". It will be combined with AUGIWorld (AW). As the editor for AAE you might think that I'm sad or shocked that I'm suddenly out of work. I actually started the ball rolling by asking some questions and making some suggestions. The end result is that AW will become a monthly eZine and take on some of the formatting that AAE used. For the near future I'll be the Editor-in-Chief. The next issue of AW will explain things in a bit more detail.
Going forward we will be seeking authors and articles for the broad spectrum of products that AUGI members use and we'll be working on a monthly basis so more and more often!! Stay tuned!

New Year Post - Note to AUGI Board
The AUGI board will be welcoming a new member, Shaun Bryant of the UK, as today is his first day on the job. Welcome and good luck! In light of the recent web site and forum issues I thought I'd share, as the basis for a note to the new Board, links to six posts by Seth Godin. These all appeared on his blog in the several days following the arrival of the new AUGI web site at the beginning of last month.
I include the "World's Worst Boss" because being part of the Board of Directors requires a lot of self-motivation and dedication. It tends to come after everything else going on in your life and that means very often the organization gets "less" of you.
"The Open Road" is where you are now. Will you slow down and become ineffectual or maintain your speed and direction? Do you rely on competition around you to stay motivated? Who is your "competition"?
"Where's your platform" is meant to inspire bigger thinking. Where could AUGI be, because you are there in "that seat"? Do you hope to maintain AUGI as a caretaker (important too) or do you dream a bit as well?
It is perhaps a bit more obvious why I include "The Appearance of Impropriety". In this role your actions always take on larger implications. The things you used to be able to write in a forum response and get a chuckle may now incite anger because you are not who you were anymore. This takes some getting used to, at least it did for me. You feel the same but somehow people see you differently. You are a leader now and the rules have changed for you, how you act, what you mean when you write/say something. Leading to...
Amen, "You Will be Misunderstood". No matter how you write it or say it or show it...it's going to happen. Expect it and be gracious when it happens, and try again.
No the "Answer isn't Simple" but that's usually what someone really wants from you. Explaining difficult things, simply, takes effort and some talent. The recent situation regarding the web site and forums is a good example of not either explaining things well or explaining things at all.
And a bonus one that appeared today! Insurgents and Incumbents.
I encourage you all to be better this year than last, better than previous Boards were, raise the bar for future Boards.

AUGI Reaches Agreement Regarding Forum Data

AUGI and Illiac have reached agreement for the transference of AUGI data. The agreement was signed by all parties late Monday and includes a mutually agreed timeline for exchange of the data. Once the data exchange is completed, AUGI can work to incorporate the data in the new AUGI website.
The AUGI Forums will be the first data restored. We will be moving back to vBulletin as a Forum platform. Old data will be restored in its original state. Forum posts that were created on our new site will be incorporated from the Expression Engine forums as we are able. Once the Forum data is in place and fully tested the existing logins should allow access to all posts as before.
It is expected that all prior Forum posts, avatars, signatures, access levels will be the same as they were. This may take some verification as we are moving over one million posts and attachments.
We expect the restoration of the Forums to be completed by January 7th or sooner.
We thank all those that have worked toward a positive outcome within AUGI and Illiac.

AUGI Update
To steal from the Willy Wonka movie where the school teacher refers to the "recent unpleasantness", For AUGI, David Harrington (President Elect for AUGI) posted the following update in the current forums.
- AUGI’s previous web service provider (Illiac) has assured us that the historical forum data is not lost nor are its backups. The data exists in full and will be restored.
- Illiac has prepared a temporary forum system with the “old” forum data to go online.
- AUGI and Illiac are working to finalize an agreement to transfer the forum data to AUGI.
- Illiac has the temporary site ready to go live and AUGI is prepared to go live once the agreement is in place.
- Both parties expect an agreement to be reached within 24 hours.
- Within a few days after the agreement is in place, the temporary forum system is expected to be online and AUGI will begin developing the permanent forum site.
- Because of the functional limits within the EE forum software, coupled with having access to the old forum data and input from members, AUGI will be reverting back to vBulletin forum software which should be operational within one month after the agreement is in place.
- Based on input from members and functional limits of EE forum setup, AUGI will be reverting back to the “familiar” forum topic structure.
- Once the vBulletin software is configured and populated with the required forum structure, all old forum posts will be imported and merged with EE forum posts. (EE posts merged from EE to/with original Forum Posts in vBulletin format). Then the temporary site will be deactivated.
I'm glad that both parties were able to work together and make some progress!!

OpEd Links Broken for AUGI Forums
I realized last week that I've got over a thousand posts on this blog now since I started it at the end of 2004. Over these past years I've created a fair number of links to other sites. Seems like a good idea because I can just point readers to another spot easily. That is until that site either changes something, the information just goes away...or in the case of AUGI the forums, the domain name service (DNS) isn't pointing at the same server anymore. While AUGI sorts out the details of that situation my posts here have an untold number of broken links. When the forum data is migrated into AUGI at some point I have no illusion that my original URL's will still work. It would be wonderful if they do, or if even some of them do...
Long story short...if you click on a link that promises to take you to a AUGI forum post/thread...it's more than likely to generate this message.
In fact any bookmarks or shortcuts you have created to get to certain parts of the AUGI site will generate the error too. I've received more than a few emails from people about their bookmarks and shortcuts not working anymore.
An aside, reading through the posts at AUGI the past few days I get the impression that members believe that AUGI has a very broad presence in the industry. Seems reasonable based on our combined involvement with AUGI but oddly enough in my travels during the last 6 years the one consistent thing about AUGI is how FEW people have actually heard of it. Stepping in a room of +/-10 architects/engineers about 40 weeks a year I've been surprised to find that at the most one or two are members and often none are. As for those who aren't members most of the time they haven't even heard of AUGI. Considering I do nothing but Revit and Navisworks consulting I've always expected people to be pretty aware of it. So as prolific as the Revit community has been at AUGI it is surprising to find how few are actually aware of it. What's my point? Just that we aren't nearly as famous as we think we are? 8-)
In a recent post Alan (blog: Revit Structure Learning Curve) mentions a survey completed by NBS (National Building Service in the UK) that suggests that about half the "industry" is aware of BIM. I wonder if the survey should be run asking about awareness of Revit instead? I'd be curious if more are aware of the product than of the concept. The reason I mention this is that it is like AUGI in a way, as hot or as relevant as something seems to me, there is always a group of people outside of it all. Unaware or even uninterested.
Even further off topic! I also read that Chris Zoog (founded the Revit forum at Zoogdesign which merged with AUGI in 2004) would be rolling over in his grave (regarding the forum data issue). Rumors of Mr. Zoog's death are greatly exaggerated. If he were dead perhaps he'd be rolling...many years we must wait for that. I for one would be very disappointed if the rumor were true!

AUGI Forums
I've been wrestling with this post. Obviously anyone whose read this blog knows that I've been involved in AUGI for many years. I served on the Board of Directors from 2006-2008 and little bit more when the election process hit a snag. None of the nominated members were approved. My term was extended until I was replaced by a new election six months later.
This past Wednesday night members found a new website for AUGI. They then noticed that the forums weren't online and then were stunned to find that the forums were not only offline but that when they resurfaced they were completely revamped and none of the legacy data is there. There is a seven year long back story that I won't get into since most people are just concerned with the forum data.
A very good friend asked me if I approved of what the AUGI Board of Directors chose to do: My answer was/is YES and NO. How typically political you might react? It's completely honest though.
My yes is tied to the legacy of the past seven years, my ten years as a member and volunteer, my 2.5 years on the Board of Directors and tons of minutiae. I've longed for the day that AUGI was truly free again to manage its own affairs and able to do what the members actually wanted to do. That is actually true today. AUGI is fully funded and it has complete control over its assets again. Except one unfortunate "loose end", the forum data.
My no is tied to how the Board chose to deal with this last item. I wish that it chose to put the gory details of the last seven years on the table so that members could decide how aggressively it wanted to deal with its forum data. It is the Board's responsibility to make decisions for the organization and having served in that role I do respect the burden. I do also think that the Board needs to put its trust in the members with really big decisions too.
Trust is a two-way-street and no Board in the last decade truly has fully deserved its members trust. I think that this one deserves recognition for facing very difficult decisions head-on, more so than any other board since 2003. AUGI was facing insolvency just a couple years ago and it is doing well today, that took dedication and some gutsy work. The members ought to consider extending a bit of trust their way too, even if they don't get to see all the details they've been wrestling with.
What now?
I believe the real value of AUGI is the members and their willingness to help each other, not just on past conversations (not just their posts). Sure they are great to search and find but more often than not people just ask the question all over again. Because that interaction is the value, that's what brings people back again and again. It is the quality of the members, their passion for the software, for sharing. It isn't just posts from 2003, 2006 or 2009... it's nice that they are/were there but not the sole value of the organization. If I go to a bar I don't go there to have the conversation I had last year again, I go to see people and have new conversations.
I'm hoping that AUGI can negotiate successfully for its forum data and that it can get migrated into the new web site as soon as possible. I hope that the members help reshape the new site since it IS a chance to start fresh in many ways. If we are honest there are many things about the old site that could stand a bit of rework. I'm prepared to get the heck out of the way too. I've been the Revit Community Forum manager for a long time. It's time (long overdue) for a new leader to step in and see things with fresh eyes.
For those of you who are feeling betrayed, I'm truly sorry...I can relate on many levels and not just because the forum data isn't there. On a deeper level, betrayed by people many of you don't even know. We can either keep moving forward or take the opportunity to do something else. There IS MORE to life than AUGI though I'm hard pressed to know what that is at times. Start something new, stick with AUGI, be the top poster at AUGI...you've got a great shot at beating me now, I've got zero posts now.

AUGI Email Issues - Echo

We have been experiencing an email outage for emails generated from our website. You may have noticed that you are not getting emails notifications from the AUGI Forums,Wish Lists, New Member Registration and more. We suffered an email server crash last week and have been moving to restore all services.We hope to have everything restored soon. Until that time, all non-email related functions on our website are working. The Forums are going strong and all data is still intact.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing.

Dept. of Wishes - AUGI Wish Lists for Revit Structure and MEP
While I served on the board for AUGI we saw the start of the Revit Architecture wish list at AUGI. Getting them started for Structure and MEP just wasn't in the cards then. Time passes and AUGI has just announced new wish lists for both!!

AUGI CAD Camp - Revived and 2010 Schedule
The new AUGI CAD Camp events are back and sporting a new logo.
Here's a screen capture of the current schedule, hopefully coming to a city near you. If you've attended a CAD Camp in the past AUGI hopes you'll be able to come again. If you have not attended then AUGI hopes you'll be able to this year.
Just in case you were wondering what happened to CAD Camps. When AUGI's relationship with its executive director and services organization changed at the end of 2008 the AUGI CAD Camp events were sidelined. Initially because the team that ran it was no longer intact. The economic situation during the past year (2009) didn't make it any easier to get them up and running again. In the end the organization chose to focus on getting things back up and running in 2010.

AUGI CAD Camps
It is good news that AUGI will be bringing this event back to a city near you. At the end of last year the firm that organized CAD Camps ended its relationship with AUGI. That combined with the fiscal unpleasantness that has been a prominent part of this year meant that having any of these events was very unlikely.
It's my personal belief that even if there had been no management changes that any or even all Camps that might have been scheduled would have been cancelled in light this year's economy. It was hard enough to sustain AUGI World and get the AUGI|AEC EDGE magazine to happen let alone get a series of CAD Camps going.
Regardless it appears that 2010 will bring them back and hopefully the economic situation will rebound along with it. I wish it happened on my watch but I'm grateful there is progress.

AUGI 2009 Special Election is underway - please vote!
I am echoing the BLAUGI post and various other blog posts on this subject with the hope that we will have a much improved voter turnout compared with the last election in December 2008.
The AUGI Board of Directors Ballot is OPEN - 2009 Special Election
The AUGI 2009 Special Election is underway...
We have four candidates on the slate. Only two seats are open for the Board.
Each candidate should be considered individually. A candidate is elected based on total Yes votes counted. You may vote on all four candidates, but you may only vote Yes on a total of two candidates. The two candidates receiving the largest number of Yes votes will be elected.
The process of narrowing down the number of qualified nominees to the four candidates included on this year's ballot was a difficult one. The candidates that are elected will serve the remainder of a two year period that continues through December, 2010.
We commend all the nominees and candidates for their willingness to serve and be part of this process. Their credentials and dedicated service are one of the reasons that AUGI is such a strong organization. It is through members such as these that we continue to expand the offerings, programs, events, and training to AUGI members.
NOTE: You must have been a member of AUGI for at least 30 days prior to the close of nominations (May 24, 2009) to be able to vote in this year's Board of Directors election.

AUGI|AEC EDGE
I've been neglecting my own writing here because I've been busy wrapping up something else. That something else is new magazine that is being developed by AUGI and Extension Media. In the brand new issue of AUGI Hotnews this image appeared.
As the editor for this issue I can tell you that it has twenty-plus articles about Revit Architecture, Structure and MEP as well as cross-discipline subjects. It features contributions from volunteer writers: David Baldacchino, Jarrod Baumann, Bill Brown, Lay Christopher Fox, Bruce Gow, Laura Handler, Anthony Hauck, Jim Keller, Joel Londenberg, Michelle Louw, Robert Manna, Toby Maple, Matt Mason, Damon Ranieri, Jamie Richardson, James Salmon, Elizabeth Shulok, David Thirlwell, Cyril Verley, & Tom Weir. I'm very grateful to them for their willingness to contribute their time and knowledge to the magazine!
It will be an "E" magazine available to read online or download. Stay tuned...it will be out soon. We hope you'll like it!

Off Topic - AUGI Beer Bust Mugs - AU 2008
Don't freeze your AUGI Beer Bust mug, it may "bust" when you add your beverage to it!!
For those of you who attend Autodesk University each year or have at least once you are probably aware that AUGI has given away a beer mug at the end of the AUGI general meeting (Sponsors pay for these mugs so that AUGI and you don't have to, they are listed on the mug too). Attendees then go to the AUGI Beer Bust in the exhibition hall to wander around and see what vendors are offering and to, yep you guessed it, drink beer.
This past AU was no different. Well there were mugs again but they were not glass as they were in previous years. This year the the hotel/convention services people told Autodesk/AUGI that they would not be allowed to bring glass into the exhibit hall. The only option to provide a mug and access to the beer was something other than glass. Thus this year's offering was a clear acrylic mug with a liquid that claimed to be "freezable" so that a beverage could stay colder longer.
We've had a few reports so far that mugs have "shattered" and "cracked" when they were frozen and then used. If this has happened to you please respond to this thread at AUGI and "vote" on the appropriate response in the poll. We don't know what can or will be done about mugs that have "failed" to perform. When we do we'll let "you" know too.
For those of you with a sense of humor about this, one member opined that maybe the vendor took the "Beer Bust" labeling on the mug literally?

Changing of the Guard - AUGI Revit Community
I announced my plan to retire from my AUGI Revit community forum management and moderating roles at the end of the year in this THREAD at AUGI today.
I wrote the following:
Hello All,
I am stepping down from forum management and moderating at the end of this year.
I have had my "turn at bat" so to speak and I think that it is time to give the community an opportunity to have fresh "leadership" as well as to give others a chance to dig in to volunteer in our community in a broader way.
This means we have a little less than six months to sort it out.
I don't know how to do this, it is my first time. I don't know if it should be a voting process or a selection and appointment process. This is where you all come in... We need to figure out how to do this.
Please respond in this thread with suggestions for how this change over might best be done.
We currently have the following members as voluntering in some capacity for some or all of our community forums:
Jim Balding - Links Manager
Steve Stafford - Retiring
Wes Macaulay - Wishlist Manager
David Baldacchino - Tips & Tricks Manager
James Vandezande - Community Chairperson
Mr. Spot (Chris Price) - moderator
Ski South - Moderator
Tom Weir - Moderator RST
Paul Andersen - Moderator RST
Matthew Danowski - Moderator RME (awaiting activation)
BeeGee - still assigned though technically a retired moderator
czoog - still assigned though technically a retired moderator
This is also an opportunity for our existing volunteers to revisit their own needs and plans and decide if they wish to continue on or "pass the hat" as well.
Thanks for the opportunity to serve in this capacity! I hope that I haven't overstayed my welcome and I looked forward to what new leadership brings!!

Impromptu AUGI Gathering - Larkspur, CA
I am presently in San Rafael, CA attending the Autodesk User Group International's board of director meetings this week.
