A wall that starts out as a single full height wall, spanning many levels, can be Split (Split Tool) in a section/elevation view at each required level where they change size/type. They'll stay aligned with each other based on their location line if one of them are moved. If we try to change the location line parameter for one of the affected walls we'll get this familiar warning.
For columns it would be handy if we could use the Split Tool and get similar behavior. Unfortunately, the Split Tool doesn't even "see" columns (structural or architectural). If they fixed that, it would be nice if this was possible in Graphical Column Schedules too. To add insult to injury Split works on Beams, just not columns. Oh the inequity, the inequity...

Great Post!! I did not even realize that you could split walls in sections into separate walls. I need to do this all the time and was having to trace the lower walls to create the upper. Thanks for the time savings!
FYI- You can make it work with the Split tool. The Split took works on *Slanted Columns* just not *vertical columns.* But a column can be "Slanted" with no Offset (which means its vertical). So window select all your columns, in the properties palette set them to be "Slanted," and nothing will change geometrically. Then use the split tool to your hearts content. (Then if you want, put them back...)
I've run into a bug where changing a column to slanted kills its masking ability in plan views. Unless it really must be slanted it's not something I'm going to do just so I can use the split tool, which ought to work on regular colums.
That it does work on slanted columns is just exasperating!
Agreed... But you can switch them back after you Split them. :)
I also think the issue with masking in plan has to do with "Show Pre Cut in Plan," as that ends up all wonky on slanted columns anyway.
All of our columns always show 3d geometry regardless of plan view settings, and switching them and splitting them works. But it very well could be something in the content thats different. :(
You can switch them back but the masking doesn't came back with the switch, sadly.
the splitted walls in sections keep their base constraints the same.
this is important if you want to split multistorey walls.
Just a quick little fun project. Let me know what you think:

Speaking of splitting columns:

Hi, this is solved with Revit 2017
Yes it is! It is all because of this blog post too ;) haha!
