Revit 2015 R2 - Default Setting for Import Positioning

This is a welcome change, one many users have been asking for a long time.

The default positioning setting is now Auto - Origin to Origin, pause for the sound of applause (and comments like "finally") in offices around the globe...

If you change the default setting, the option you select for Positioning becomes the default instead for your current Revit session. Revit will also remember a different setting for Revit models and CAD files. For example, this will make it easier to use Auto-Origin to Origin for Revit models and Auto - Center to Center for CAD files.

Glad to see this subtle but heavily wished for change.

This is all well and good but autodesk should be enabling the saving of these preferences and more into the users local INI file or other method of cache.

applause!

Good to know it is stored from previous session. Now I just need to research the .ini value for it, along with some other .ini settings in the new R2

This one "Feature Request" has always made me wonder about how responsive they are being. What does it take for a request to rise to the level of "this has to be in the next release." Made AUGI Wish Lists are not enough or not getting to the right people.

And their reason for refusing to do this simple thing for the past ten years is ...... what? How difficult was this, programmatically? autodesk deserves no 'thanks' for this, as it has been a deliberate shortcoming in revit for far too long. If, as an architect, your PAYING client kept asking you to 'Please put a light in that walk-in closet', and you refused to do it FOR 10 YEARS, what would they say to you after you finally got around to making it happen? For this reason, as well as dozens of others, autodesk is NOT a good corporate citizen.

Excellent!! Next item I'd like them to address - make "current view only" the default when Linking CAD. After that, take the "Import CAD" button off the ribbon - hide it away in some deep dark corner of a sub-menu, where you have to know to look for it. Those things would make it much more "newbie proof".

[clap, clap, clap] applause for Autodesk for making "origin to origin" the default. How come it was not the default for all these years? Finally.

It's my understanding that it worked the way it did because enough people inside the factory believed it was the best/proper way to try to mitigate the litany of support requests they receive about imported files being "missing", off in the distance, not being able to find their files etc... as well as trying to avoid files being outside the desired scope of the model extents.

When did "belief" trump "experience"??? When did "developers" know better than "users"???

Grouchy fella... I'm just glad they changed it...

I just can't get that upset or angry about it what with all the really scary stuff going on in the world...

not even a tiny bit Steve?
kiddin'
there's no good reason in my opinion.
that being said. I like this piece of software that feels almost as messy as Autocad sometimes.
"you want to design a crazy building in 3D with all your drawings working with STR and MEP! Learn to code first!"

Mr. Stafford:

It is likely none of my business, but I must ask: Do you pay for your annual versions of Revit, out of your own pocket?

Thanks

Every last penny, for about ten years now.
