Not Responding - Don't Panic

...and remember your towel!

I quite frequently see (not responding) on the Title Bar of Revit these days, more now than in the past it seems. It can be a bit disconcerting however don't panic. It is usually just Revit refusing to talk to Windows while it is cranky through whatever task you've given it. It's as if Revit is saying, "Hang on a minute, I'm busy, I can't be bothered to tell you (Windows) what I'm up to at the moment."

So when you see the message, don't panic, give it a few minutes, check out Task Manager, see how much memory is being used. Make sure the computer is actually "stuck" before doing something drastic and using "End Task".

Does it eventually finish opening? If so, don't worry about the message "not responding", that's the point of the post ;)

What is different today from yesterday, assuming it has been working? For example, did an update to your operating system (OS) get applied last night, this morning? Did an update for Revit get applied? Do you have 3rd Party tools installed? Do you have IT support at your office?

It is possible the installation is corrupted so you might need to Repair (part of the OS) or Reinstall.

No update. It's keeps telling me something about my license, asking me to repair my license

There's your clue, Revit can't find your license. Search Autodesk help for licensing issues.

When Revit reports "not responding" and you just did something (some kind of command action) very often it is just processing something complicated and needs more time and won't reply to Operating System which causes the "not responding" info.

If you've given Revit some time to resolve the task and it still report "not responding" it may actually mean it is stalled, out of memory and/or has crashed. It may be necessary to use End Task and start over.

It won't help you now unfortunately, remember when you're working in-place...massing or families...it is imperative you finish (even though you are not completely finished) the work (after a little while) so you can save as you work. Spending many hours without saving is encouraging the worst outcome.

Sorry...also..."how long to wait?" That's never easy. If I just clicked something and the spinning wheel and not responding happens immediately and several minutes later it is the same...I'll be inclined to use End Task. If the task I'm finishing is large, affects many elements that "should" take time to process then I'll give it more time to complete. Also make sure your network is not experiencing excessive latency or the connection has not been lost.

Saving frequently means you are faced with the least re-work if you must use End Task.
